News and Notes -- May 31, 2005
A great deal has happened since last time. Professor Briggs' desk is overflowing with important news and notes, so let's begin the process of sorting through all of it.
> Reynolds graduate Kristen Micsky helped Duquesne University's women's track and field team to a second-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships May 8 in Richmond, Va. The Dukes accumulated 135 team points to take second, the program's best-ever finish at the A-10 Championships.
Micsky, a senior, earned the conference's Most Outstanding Field Performer after winning both the long and triple jumps at the two-day event. Micsky won the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, 7 inches, then won the triple jump with a leap of 38-11 3/4. In addition, she also won the 400 hurdles with a time of 64.01 seconds.
Micsky added a second-place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-5. She also owns the Duquesne record in the long jump, reaching 19-1 as a sophomore.
She capped her collegiate career by earning Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic honors. Micsky owns a 3.46 GPA in occupational therapy and is a Dean's List student. She has also been named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll as well as the Director of Athletics' Honor Roll. Micsky has also been vice president of Duquesne's Occupational Therapy class.
> Kennedy Catholic graduate Nolan Reimold capped an outstanding junior season by earning the Mid-American Conference's Player of the Year. Entering last week, Reimold led the nation in slugging percentage (.791) and is fourth nationally in home runs per game (.42).
Reimold finished the season with a .360 average and belted 20 homers in 50 games for the Falcons (33-18). Reimold led BGSU with 51 runs scored, 62 runs batted in, three triples, 137 total bases, 40 walks and a .496 on-base percentage. He also went 4-for-4 stealing bases and did not commit an error in 84 chances in right field. The Bowling Green athletic site recently posted at Toledo Blade feature story on Reimold.
> Hickory grad Greg Mentrek is one of Reimold's teammates at Bowling Green. A sophomore right-handed pitcher, Mentrek appeared in nine games this season and posted a 7.07 ERA in 14 innings. He fanned seven batters. As a freshman, Mentrek went 3-1 on the mound.
> Grove City High grad and current Slippery Rock University senior Bill Jordan placed 13th in the decathlon at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships May 26-27 in Abilene, Texas. Jordan accumulated 6,383 total points in the two-day event. Jordan won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference decathlon title with 6,124 points May 14 at Mansfield University.
> Wilmington product Brandon "Boomer" Whiting earned Second Team All-Conference USA as a junior center fielder for the University of Louisville baseball team. Whiting helped the Cardinals to a 32-24 record, including a 15-14 mark in C-USA action. Whiting hit .327 this season and led Louisville in hits (72), runs (56), at-bats (220), stolen bases (26) and hit-by-pitches (14). Whiting posted a .415 on-base percentage and did not commit an error in 142 total chances.
> Two Mercer County products earned Second Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference recognition as members of the Grove City College softball team. Grove City High grad Steph Briggs and Mercer alum Abby Moose capped their respective senior seasons with All-PAC honors. Briggs led the Wolverines in batting average (.386), slugging (.500) and on-base percentage (.438) as the team's starting right fielder.
Moose hit .297, second on the team, and led Grove City with 17 runs scored. Moose also swiped 11 bases and walked a team-high nine times.
> Reynolds grad Jon Spencer earned Second Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference honors as the starting second baseman for the Thiel College baseball team. A senior, Spencer hit .289 while starting all 37 games for Thiel (16-21, 5-10 PAC). He led the team with 11 stolen bases and tied for the team lead with 11 doubles. Spencer was one of two Tomcats to start all 37 games this year.
> Grove City High grad Darren Holmes competed as a freshman hurdler for the Washington and Jefferson men's track and field team this spring. Holmes took fifth in the 110 high hurdles (16.97 seconds) and seventh in the 400 hurdles (61.44). He also competed on the Presidents' 400- and 1600-meter relay teams.
> West Middlesex grad Katie Porter helped the Westminster College softball team capture its first-ever PAC title this spring. The Lady Titans (29-10 overall) advanced to the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament, where they earned runner-up honors.
Porter, an All-PAC Honorable Mention selection, tied for the team lead with six stolen bases and was second on the squad with 11 sacrifice bunts. Porter hit .235 and played errorless defense during the season.
> Wilmington High graduate Kylie Mackaness recently completed her freshman season as a member of the Grove City College women's track and field team. A freshman middle distance runner, Mackaness helped Grove City secure its seventh consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference title April 30 at Washington and Jefferson College with a pair of fourth-place finishes.
Mackaness took fourth in the 800 (2:29.00) then placedf fourth in the 1500 (5:24.61).
> Washington and Jefferson won the Presidents' Athletic Conference's Men's All-Sports Trophy while Westminster repeated as the Women's All-Sports Trophy recipient. The W+J men accrued 42 points to hold off Westminster (40) and Grove City (38). On the women's side, Westminster earned 44 points, warding off Grove City (39.5) and Washington and Jefferson (38).
> Thiel College head volleyball/softball coach Sarah Roseto recently resigned, following the conclusion of the 2004-2005 academic year. A search is underway for her replacement.
> Kennedy Catholic product John Matune helped the Westminster College men's golf team qualify for the NCAA Championships at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Westminster placed 16th out of 23 teams with a four-day total of 1258 strokes.
Matune tied for 53rd with a four-day total of 312 (78-81-76-77). He placed second overall at the PAC Championships with a two-day total of 150 April 28-29, helping Westminster win the conference title at Oglebay in Wheeling, W. Va.
> Westminster College junior Carrie Fleckenstein, a Mercer product, broke the WC record in the pole vault at the PAC Championships April 30, clearing 8-6 3/4. Fleckenstein earned Second Team All-PAC honors for her effort.
> Hickory grad and current Slippery Rock University sophomore Preston Gibbs won the PSAC's triple jump title at Mansfield May 14, setting a new stadium record with a mark of 47-7 1/2. Gibbs also took second in the long jump, marking at 22-4 3/4.
