News and Notes -- January 25, 2005

Plenty to talk about in this edition of "News and Notes." Numerous basketball players doing well, some great mat action and much more.

*Former Farrell ace Iren Rainey has re-surfaced at Cheyney University, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's Eastern Division. Rainey has played in all 14 games for Cheyney (1-13) and is averaging 11 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Rainey, who began his collegiate career at Gannon, is also averaging just under three assists per game. According to the PSAC's stats, Rainey has made 11 starts for the Wolves.

*Craig Wellman, a Kennedy Catholic grad, is having a solid sophomore season at Clarion University for head coach Dr. Ron Righter. He has played in all 16 games for the 11-5 Eagles, including three starts. Wellman pumped in 14 points off the bench at Cheyney Dec. 22 in an 86-83 Clarion win. He had a career-high 16 points in Clarion's 92-47 win over Penn State Altoona Nov. 23 at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.

*On the women's side Reynolds product Jessica Saul is in her freshman season at Clarion. She has played in 11 games for Clarion (14-3, 2-0 PSAC-West). She is averaging 1.0 points per game in limited action.

*Hickory grad Sarah Gill has moved into the starting lineup for the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team. She has made four starts this year for the Spartans, including starting against both Brandeis and New York University last weekend. Gill has appeared in 10 games and is averaging 2.8 points per game. She has six three-point goals this season.

*Kennedy Catholic graduate Jim Gibson is a member of the Edinboro University wrestling team. A 184-pound sophomore, Gibson is 15-9 on the season for the Fighting Scots (7-3, 1-0 EWL). He picked up a forfeit win Friday night, Jan. 21, in Edinboro's 32-13 win over Clarion in EWL action. Edinboro will be participating in this weekend's PSAC Wrestling Championships at East Stroudsburg University.

*Reynolds product Jake Habel is a freshman 125-pounder at Washington and Jefferson. Habel took second for the Presidents at the Washington and Lee Invitational Jan. 15 in Lexington, Va. He also went 4-0 at the Ursinus College North-South Duals in Collegeville, Pa. Jan. 8.

*Two Lakeview grads are listed on the Slippery Rock University wrestling roster. Drew Rose is a 141-pound junior while Mike Bromley is a 197-pound senior for the 3-11 Rock mat squad.

*Grove City College senior guard Abby Moose, a Mercer grad, recently scored her 1,000th point in Grove City's 61-51 win at Waynesburg Jan. 19. Moose added 15 points in Grove City's 70-64 home loss to Washington and Jefferson Monday night. She is eighth on Grove City's all-time scoring list with 1,015 career points.

*Wednesday night, Grove City College men's basketball team will play its 2,000th all-time game as the Wolverines host Thiel at 7:30 p.m. The game is preceded by the women's game between Grove City and Thiel, which tips at 5:30 p.m. Both games can be heard on News/Talk 790 WPIC. Joe Klimchak will have the call from the Grove City College Arena.

ON ASSIGNMENT

Lock Haven University is looking for a new head football coach. Last week, former head coach Mark Luther was "reassigned" within the University. Terry Szucs is the interim head coach until a new head coach is named.

END OF AN ERA

Longtime Westminster College coach and professor S. Kipley Haas is retiring from the school after 35 years at the end of the academic year, June 30, 2005. Haas spent 22 years (1970-92) as the head women's basketball coach at Westminster and also coached the women's tennis team for 14 years. She directed the Lady Titan tennis team to a 9-5 mark in 2004 and earned the Presidents' Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award.

Haas also spent nine years (1992-2001) as an assistant women's basketball coach at Westminster and taught numerous physical education and wellness courses during her tenure.
