News and Notes -- February 3, 2005

A lot of roundball recaps to rattle off in this edition. Without delay, let's get started.

> The Presidents' Athletic Conference raised nearly $500 Jan. 24 during PAC Tsunami Relief Night as collections were held at three PAC doubleheader sites that evening -- Grove City, Thiel and Westminster. Student-athletes from those schools collected donations, which will be sent overseas to help the unfortunate people who were affected by the late-December earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

The PAC will hold a second round of collections Feb. 12 at the opposite sites of the first collection. That day, Thiel is at Waynesburg, Grove City visits Washington and Jefferson and Bethany hosts Westminster. If you are interested in making a donation, send me a note and I'll give you the necessary information.

> Lakeview graduate Tenesha Aden is having a solid sophomore year at Penn State Behrend. Aden leads the Lions (10-9, 5-7 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference) in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg). She is also shooting a team-best 48.6 percent from the floor this season.

> Finally, this: Venango Catholic is not in Mercer County. It's not even in District 10 any more as it joined Rocky Grove, Cranberry, East Forest and West Forest in a mass exodus to District 9 and the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference. But I thought this tidbit would interest the loyal readers out there.

Venango Catholic's girls basketball team is 5-15 overall and 2-8 in the KSAC. Tuesday night, VC earned a 46-29 win over host North Clarion in Frills Corners. It is the fourth time this year that Venango Catholic has defeated the She-Wolves (great early 80s-style nickname), yet it is the first time that it counted in the KSAC standings.

Because the KSAC has grown from a 9-team league to a 14-team loop, the teams now play a single round-robin for league standing (a 13-game conference schedule). However, some of the teams still play twice during the season. Only the second meeting counts in the KSAC standings, however.

Venango Catholic opened the season with a 44-16 win over North Clarion Dec. 3 in the East Forest Tournament. VC then dropped eight straight before earning a 48-38 win over North Clarion Dec. 28 in the consolation game of the North Clarion Tournament.

Sixteen days later, VC handed the She-Wolves a 43-26 defeat. On Jan. 21, Venango Catholic shocked perennial power Cranberry in the Berry Dome, 56-54, in double overtime, giving VC its lone win over a school not based in Frills Corners. Then Tuesday night, VC completed the sweep of North Clarion.
